Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival 2.0

On April 14, 2018, my family and I went to Japantown in San Francisco to visit the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival for my cultural emporium for school. A cultural emporium is basically where you have to do something out of the ordinary that exposes you to new types of cultures and religions. Turns out, Sophie also did this for her cultural emporium when she was in 6th grade, and I wrote a post about it, Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival. This festival is a celebration of nature’s ephemeral beauty, marking the brief period when cherry trees blossom. In Japantown, people honor this special occasion by displaying Japanese culture in performances, art, food, and more. We decided to go to the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival to learn more about Japanese culture.

The Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival highlights Japanese culture and activities. My family and I started the day in Japantown Peace Plaza where the main events were taking place. As soon as we arrived, we immediately noticed people dancing on a stage in the middle of the plaza. They were dressed in kimonos and danced with beautiful fans. After the performance, we began walking through the crowds and the hundreds of booths spanning through the long streets of Japantown. There were a great variety of booths, each one advertising or showing something different. We then traveled up the street to another building. Inside, we visited a 3D Japanese Paper Dolls exhibit. The craftsmanship was absolutely extraordinary! Each doll was handmade from bright, colorful paper, and was folded with precision. Around the room, groups of dolls were portrayed in different scenes. One station showed a group of ladies next to a paper cherry tree, with each doll holding a blossoming branch. Another scene depicted men striking drums with tiny sticks. Each doll in the room was dressed in an intricate kimono made from paper.

One scene of paper dolls:

When we finished admiring the dolls, we walked to the Koto Ensemble Performance. A koto is a Japanese zither, with thirteen strings stretching across a long piece of wood. There are pegs going in a diagonal line across the middle of the piece of wood in a specific pattern to make the notes. Five ladies dressed in Japanese attire were playing the kotos. With long, fake fingernails strapped to their fingers, they plucked the strings to make a beautiful and mystical melody. One woman seemed to be the leader of the group, as she sometimes took the lead melody while the others played an accompanying tune in the background. When the ensemble finished their long piece, they stood up and bowed. My family and I enthusiastically applauded their amazing piece.

These are the ladies playing the kotos:

After listening to the kotos, we wandered around the rest of the building and discovered a Japanese Embroidery exhibit. When I walked in, I could immediately tell that I was going to love it. Stationed near the entrance were finished works of embroidery. Thousands of tiny stitches in different colors and patterns made a complex masterpiece. A few ladies were sitting at tables, quietly stitching on pieces of fabric held taut by blocks of wood on each side. One of them was embroidering a butterfly on a background of small, silver circles. We told her that her work was amazing. She thanked us, and in our short conversation, we discovered that each of the silver circles took around an hour to make. The lady said that to finish the work, it would take around a month. Being a crafter myself, I could fully appreciate the time and effort put into a project.

This is the piece that the lady was working on:

After enjoying and learning about embroidery, we moved to the Flower Arrangement exhibit, called Ikebana in Japanese. The room flourished with flowers in different sizes, colors, and shapes. Each flower arrangement had something unique about it, and all of the flowers had their own style. While observing the flowers, my mom noticed that the color and shape of a pot was specially chosen to go with a bunch of flowers. For example, one flower arrangement had dainty white flowers, bigger pink and white flowers, a green fern, and a silver strip of tinsel weaved in. The flowers sat in a silver pot, which complemented the flowers. Another flower arrangement had long green leaves and tiny pink flowers in a skinny and tall bronze vase.

This was one of the flower arrangements:

After learning about Ikebana, we returned to the street and explored some of the booths. My favorite booth was one that was selling beautiful bonsai trees. I recognized some of the types of trees, but these trees were tiny! One bonsai that I especially liked had a small, ceramic fisherman next to the tree. He was sitting on a rock holding a minuscule fishing pole. A clay bridge spanned a gap between two rocks and was painted a subtle green.

This was my favorite bonsai tree:

Once we had finished looking at the bonsai trees, we went to an origami exhibit in a store called Paper Tree. There was an origami dragon that caught my attention. Its scales were individually folded and had a sleek curve. Incredibly, the dragon was created from a single piece of paper.

This was the origami dragon:

Also in the store, there was a great variety of kaleidoscopic paper, including handmade, natural paper where individual fibers were still visible.

The natural paper:

As we left the store, we noticed a man holding a gigantic, strikingly orange lizard over his head. Its enormous eyes darting around at the crowd, terrifying me. Back at the central stage, we watched a Japanese fencing demonstration, called kendo in Japanese. People dressed in metal masks and special uniforms were fighting each other using bamboo swords. Once the performance concluded, we walked to the West Mall in Japan Center. My sister and I browsed a few stores, looking in wonder at all the trinkets and trifles. Out of all the Japanese foods and desserts stationed in the mall, I finally chose to eat green tea frozen yogurt as an end to this wonderful day. Finally, after all the festivities, we went home.

While visiting the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival, I realized how Japanese culture is unique and extraordinary. The Japanese people create fascinating art, dances, music, and so much more. I enjoyed exploring at the Cherry Blossom Festival and broadening my view of Japanese culture and traditions. Learning about Japan’s arts increased my understanding of the world’s diversity. Now I know that learning about other cultures can be an opportunity to learn something about the world, too.

Painting My Room!

This weekend, I painted my room! I chose a light blue called Cloud-Wisped Sky (in an eggshell finish). This was a big change because my room used to have bunnies on the wall. Now there are no bunnies- they are covered with paint. It was really fun and took the whole day to paint it. This is how the color looks:
I love how this turned out!

Before we could start painting though, we had to do so much preparation. The very first thing was to put plastic on the ground. This was so we wouldn’t get the carpet dirty. We had to use a lot of blue tape to stick the plastic on. Since my room had wallpaper on the walls, we had to take that off to start painting. So, my family and I did some research and experiments for how to take it off.

The first wall was the smallest- the testing wall. This actually was the hardest wall of all because we used an iron to take it off. The iron was super hot, and we had to use a wet towel pressed against the wall, with the iron on top. When ever we pushed the iron against the wall, hot steam came gushing out. It was so hot it burned our hands! It took such a long time just to do that small wall!

Then my mom researched a better way to take off wallpaper, and found a much more efficient way to do it- faster and better. First, we would take off the top layer. Here is a picture of my mom taking off the outside of the wallpaper:

She did a great job helping me take it off.

There is also a layer underneath that is like thin brown paper. We took that off using a spray bottle and a paper towel. Underneath that is a thick layer of glue. This was the hardest to take off because we had to use hot water, a basin, and a towel to wipe it all off. The whole thing was very time-consuming, but with some music and a friend it goes by quickly.

We had to move all of my furniture to take the wallpaper off. Sometimes, I had to sleep in the middle of the room or on the side. But with patience and perseverance, we eventually removed all of it.

Here is a picture of me taking the very last piece of wallpaper off.

It felt like a great accomplishment to finally finish!

So after taking off all the wallpaper, it was time to move on. But before painting, I had to choose a color. My dad gave me a giant color wheel from Kelly Moore so I could look at the options There were so many!
This is what all the colors look like:

There were hundreds to choose from!

I knew that if I chose a color that looked rich and vibrant at first glance, then it would look really dark once it was covering all the walls in my room. My dad told me the story of when he was young and he picked out a blue color for his room that turned out to be way too dark, but once they finished painting his room, they could never be bothered to go back and change it, and he lived in that dark blue room until he left for college! 🙂 So, he suggested that I pick a lighter color. 😀

I found a trick; if you hold the color chip up to the wall, you can kind of imagine how it will look on all the walls. Contemplating the billions of choices, I finally picked a really pretty light blue color called Cloud-Wisped Sky.

The final step before painting was to prime the walls, which means painting a thick white paint over the dark parts so they won’t show through the actual paint color. This was finally the part where we painted over the bunnies that have been in my childhood forever. It was kind of sad, but I was ready to do it.

Before I was born, this was my sister Sophie’s room, so this was a big change for both of us.

This picture shows Sophie and I standing in front of the bunnies before we erase them from existence.

Priming the walls was actually quicker and easier than I expected.

Here is a picture of me painting over the bunnies. Erasing bunnies from existence in progress!

We had to wear old clothes so if we got paint on them, it wouldn’t matter too much.

The fumes were overwhelming, so that night, I slept on the pull-out couch in Sophie’s room. I was excited that the next day I would finally paint my room!

The day had come to paint my room! I was really anxious to get started. We removed all the furniture from my room except my bed because it wouldn’t easily fit through the door. 🙂 We covered the whole bed in plastic so paint wouldn’t get on it.

Later that day, we went to Kelly Moore to buy the paint. It took around 5 minutes for them to mix the paint, and we went back home with a gallon full of Cloud-Wisped Sky. Then, we finally started painting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is a picture of me painting over the primer. I was sad, but mostly happy.

Everybody in my family helped to paint all the walls in my room.

To get to the high parts, my dad would put the roller brush on a pole. He can get to the parts closest to the ceiling.

Here is a picture of my dad in action.

After we finished, I felt really happy. It looked great! Since we painted the whole room and the fumes were even more potent, I slept in Sophie’s room again that night.

The next day (which was today as I’m writing this), the room looked even better. The color turned a little bit darker, which made the room look prettier- just like a Cloud-Wisped Sky!

This is the corner of my room, fully painted!

My dad noticed that some of the old color (pink) was showing on the ceiling. So he took a stool and the paint color of the ceiling (New Linen in a flat finish) and painted over all the pink bits. While he was doing this, I took the Cloud-Wisped Sky paint can and painted over some spots that needed some touch-ups.

Then, my dad took the paint color of the baseboards (Blanco in a semigloss finish) and touched up the baseboards too.

Even though this was a lot of work, I am really happy with how it turned out.

I hope you enjoyed reading! Thank you! 😀

Hand-made Worry Doll

Today I finished making a worry doll. She was very hard to make, but it was a big accomplishmint in the end. The supplies needed to make a worry doll are string, rubber bands, glue, a bead, and a lot of toothpicks. This is what the finished product looks like:

IMG_1434Her name is Rosey.

Rosey has a red mini sweater over a red t-shirt. The skirt she is wearing is light pink. Her hair is a dark, dark, brown. I learned how to make her on Snapguide. Snapguide has tutorials on how to make and do cool things.

My New Pet

This weekend, I got a new pet. It is a betta fish. I chose a male because they have bigger, prettier fins. My betta fish is red, blue and purple. His name is Phoenix. Here is a picture of him:

IMG_1429He lives in a 3 gallon fish tank. Phoenix was going to live in an Aquafarm, which we got from our friend. But once we got the Aquafarm, we realized that the tank was too big and the top didn’t fit right.

I got Phoenix from Petco after going to the movies and Thai dinner. This fish was one of the cheapest. The others that had bigger fins cost about 5 dollars more. His fins are squished up in this picture, but sometimes his fins are spread out and beautiful. The reason of this is that every male betta fish gets intimitated by other male betta fish, so they spread out their fins to look bigger and stronger. Phoenix is an awesome fish, though! 😉

Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival

Recently, I went to the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival. There were actually not many cherry blossom trees. Our family was going there with of Sophie’s friends’ families. So first when we got there, we had to find the to other families. Once we found them, we all started talking and browsing around the tents that surrounded us. There were so many tents, some advertising, some just selling jewelry and other things. After we looked at all the tents, (believe me, there was a lot) we watched a show. The show was at the front of the festival, and dancers were dancing in them. They were really talented. Some of the dancers used humongous drums to make music. We watched a couple of dances, then the families (including me) all walked down the street and walked into a small room. The room was FULL with origami figures. I read a sign by the door, and the sign said that the origami people were imitating the first Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival. There were origami people, carriages, animals, and more. This is a picture of a origami women dancing in the first festival:

IMG_1338

In one corner of the room, there was the teacher of the students who made the origami festival. She had two really cute puppies with her. This is one of them:

IMG_1351This is my favorite puppy. You can see the other in the background.

IMG_1353This is an origami imitate of the puppy that the owner made. Even their outfit is sort of the same.

The lady who owned them even let me pet them!

All the families left the origami room and entered another room. This room was full of beautiful flowers. It smelled amazing. I used my camera to take so many pictures of them. Here are a few pictures of them:

There are a lot of pretty flowers. These are my favorite.

After a while, we all got hungry. So all the families walked into the nearby mall. It was humongous. My dad started looking on his phone for a place to eat. In a couple of minutes, he found a place. I was thinking that it would be a very yummy place to eat. All I had to do was go to the restaurant. So we all went to the place. Next to the restaurant, there was a desert store called Sophie’s Crepes.

IMG_1398Sophie was sort of excited about it, and wanted to go there after lunch.

Dad told us it would be sort of a short wait. But it was a lllloooooonnnnnggg wait. It took about a half an hour to actually get inside the restaurant. I was right about the food being yummy, though. I had katsu, a japanese dish. It is chicken with panko bread crumbs on top of it. There was miso soup, a salad, and a sauce to go with my plate. My dish was very good.

Turns out that we couldn’t go to Sophie’s Crepes because the line was super long. So we continued down the mall and came to another place with crepes. Sophie wanted to go there. I wanted to go too. But it turns out that we both ended up getting a smoothie/drink with tapioca balls in it. All the families browsed in a bunch of other stores. Except dad. He went to move the parking spot. We all had a great time. After that, it was time to go. Our family located our car, and we buckled and went home.

Long time, no post

This is my first post in a VERY long time. By that, I mean 2 years. So, just for fun i’m writing my text in pink. I was super excited to write another post so here I am writing it. Sometimes I like to goof around with my text words, for example: I LoVE rAinBOw$!

2012-12-28-emilys-teeth-008.jpgMy last post was when I got 3 teeth pulled out. When I had time to look at my 3 teeth, they were HUGE! Almost 2 centimeters. My mom and dad told me it was big because my teeth weren’t wiggly and they still have the long root. When the dentists pulled my teeth out, it didn’t really hurt because they put numbing cream on the gums of my teeth. I’m just saying this but that was a really long time ago.

2012-07-25-013_thumb.jpgI still remember when I got my blog. After my dad helped me set up, I instantly started on a new post. It was about all of my favorite stuffed animals.  My dad even showed me how to put a picture with my text. I was super excited when I finished. I pressed the publish button and TA DA, I made my first post.

I love to write. At school, sometimes I get carried away and write too much. One time, I accidentally wrote 9 pages for a 3-5 page assignment! The story was about me finding a leprechaun, and the leprechaun giving me 3 wishes. In the story, my 3 wishes were to become a fairy, get super powers (to hide my wings), and become a mermaid every time I step into water. But in the end, the leprechaun had to go away to see his family.  It was really fun. Everyone should write!

3 Teeth Pulled Out!

Today, I got 3 teeth pulled out at the dentist! It felt really weird. The first thing they did was, they put a q-tip with some cream to make my mouth more numb so when they pull my teeth out, I won’t feel it, and then I had to wait a couple minutes.

The next thing they did was they put a SHOT in my mouth!!! And pinched it really hard. After that, they sprayed a really bitter medicine on my teeth. I had to wait 10 minutes.

Then, they pulled my teeth out. I felt a push and a pull and cranking and then POP! Out came the tooth! I felt the blood dripping down my mouth. They stuck some cotton rolls in, to suck all the blood out of my mouth. It was gross.

In the car when we were going home, I felt hurt, but happy and relieved because my new teeth can finally grow in. When we got home, the whole family cuddled on the couch and watched Myth Busters on the T.V. and that helped me feel better!
